Blackboard Collaborate now available outside of the VLE.

IT have recently completed phase 2 of the Blackboard Collaborate rollout which means that this service is now available outside of the VLE. What does this mean to you?

Up until now anyone wanting to run a Collaborate webinar/virtual classroom has had to create one from within a Blackboard module. This has meant that participants have been restricted to only those individuals who have been enrolled onto that module or organisation. This has made it both problematic granting staff/students access to collaborate sessions from modules they aren’t enrolled on and impossible to grant anyone without a university IT account access at all. A standalone collaborate session means that anyone can be invited and join by simply clicking on a link provided by the organiser.

The way that IT is managing this service is that before individual can request a standalone session they will need to first attend a ‘First Steps with Blackboard Collaborate’ training session after that they will be able to request from IT a standalone collaborate session to be set up for whatever activity they are wishing to run. After that, you will be able to email a join link to any individuals inside or external that you would like to participate in the session.
