Ensuring your work is anonymised

Information IconIf you are submitting an assignment anonymously it is your responsibility to ensure that your name and other identifying information are not included in the document itself. In particular, take care that:

  • Your name is not written anywhere in your document.
  • Your name is not the author property of your document.

There are slight variations between versions of Word and the platform you are using (Windows, Mac OS). Click on the link for the correct operating system and version of Word that you are using.

Windows Word 2010

Windows Word 2003

Microsoft Word on a Mac

OpenOffice / Libre Office

Word 2010 in Windows:

  • Go to “File
  • Select “Info
  • Click on “Check for Issues
  • Click on “Inspect Document
  • In the “Document Inspector” dialog box, select only the ‘Document Properties and Personal Information’ box.
  • Click “Inspect
  • Click “Remove all
  • Click “Close
  • Save the document.

Word 2007 in Windows:

  • Open the Word file and click the Office button (the Windows symbol in the upper left corner)
  • Point to “Prepare
  • Click “Inspect Document
  • In the “Document Inspector” dialog box, select only the ‘Document Properties and Personal Information’ box.
  • Click “Inspect
  • Click “Remove all
  • Click “Close”
  • Save the document.

Word 2003 and earlier versions in Windows:

  • Open the Word file and click “Tools.”
  • Click “Options.”
  • Click the “Security” tab.
  • Select “Remove any personal information from file properties on save.”
  • Click “OK.”
  • Save the document.

MICROSOFT WORD on a Mac

  • Go to Preferences
  • Click on Security
  • Select “Remove personally identifiable information from the file on save” and “Warn before printing, saving or sending a document that contains tracked changes or comments”.

OpenOffice or LiberOffice.

  • Go to File > Properties
  • Select the General tab
  • Uncheck the Apply user data check-box
  • Click the Reset button
